Those Simple Things

Those Simple Things

I was having trouble sleeping last night from eating too much (hindi ba naman makuntento sa dinner, nag-Gonuts Donut pa at uminom ng gatas…!) when I chanced upon my Dad’s guitar. The sight of it brought a warm pleasant feeling. And then I thought about those other things that have that same effect on me. Next thing I knew, I was making a list in my head which went on and on. I had to grab the nearest pen and paper I can find to keep track.

Maybe you can relate to some of the things mentioned below. To some of the things listed here, I don’t expect you to understand since they are things in the list which are very personal…weirdly personal and personally weird. Hehehe :)

These are my own set of simple things.

- popping all the ‘bubbles’ in the bubblewrap
- shaking a snowglobe and seeing each styrosnow slowly fall and settle
- looking at my Dad’s guitar
- seeing a real snowflake up close for the first time and being amazed at how
perfect it looked
- getting a snail mail
- cracking the cheese covering on a cup of onion soup
- cracking a creambrulee
- seeing Mom’s dried colorful hand gloves
- tearing that intricately done wrapper from its gift
- seeing a curled up sleeping cat along a sidewalk (meron nito lagi sa
Buendia jeep station sa tabi ng mga jollyjeeps)
- that bubbling sound you hear whenever you get water from the dispenser
pampagising ko!)
- the cracking sound when you step on a dried leaf
- the shhhhhhh-ing sound when pouring sprite on dried ice cubes (aaaahhh…
refreshing! pang-softdrink commercial!)
- an old man/woman singing and playing the electric guitar (I’m particularly fond of
that old blind man playing by the MRT GMA Kamuning Station)
- bobbing up and down of a mechanical chick toy (na binili ko rin sa GMA Kamuning
Station na nagkalat na sa cubes dito sa office…Bente pesos lang! Bili na kay
Manong! hehehe :) )
- the smell of the air freed from a newly-opened package/box from the US
(amoy-Estados Unidos!)
- sunrise and sunset by the beach (basta BEACH. Period)
- a good loud relieving sneeze (hatchooooooooooo!)
- sound of waves rushing to shore on an early morning
- sight of growing waves in the late afternoon
- the feel of warm powdery white sand on the soles of my feet
- sound of plane speeding up the runway just right before it takes off
- the creases formed near the old woman’s eyes when she smiles
- a friend running to meet you
- Sprite and apple juice mixed in one cold drink (aaaahhhhh…)
- sound of a long-distance phone call (kahit super linaw pa ng reception)
- seeing a long-time crush in flesh (who you only ogle in TV)
- seeing Nicholas Cage’s hand and shoe prints for the first time
- isaw and fish balls at UP (enough said)
- accidentally finding a bill in your wallet (nice surprise!)
- accidentally finding a coin/bill on the street (blessing!)
- a towel around a jeepney driver’s neck (the best kung Good Morning towel)
- finding a hole on a jeepney driver’s shirt
- seeing the dirty nearly black hand of a jeepney driver as you hand him your fare
- sound of an awkward silence
- that hot feeling on your face when you know you’re blushing
- finding that perfect white shirt that you can wear with anything
- waking up next to someone you love
- waking up to a good hair day
- text message, phonecall, chat message from a faraway friend or someone you haven’t
heard from for a long time
- seeing a dear friend walking down the aisle
- crisp sound of a newly-sharpened pencil on a smoothly-lined paper
- church bells ringing from afar
- getting on an empty train in the morning
- that innocent subtle shy smile on a baby cramped on her/his mother’s arms
- a toothless smile from a baby or from an old man/woman
- a pregnant woman being offered a seat
- the many faces of a security guard
- sound of Kropek absorbing vinegar
- the many implications of seeing that cracking paint on the wall
- opening the fridge and finding mom’s homemade eyecream
- lighting a candle
- the anticipation you feel upon seeing a stack of borrowed movies (DVDs)
you haven’t watched
- Clover Cheese and spicy vinegar (that's it)
- watching people at the airport’s arrival terminal
- passing by a flowershop and finding tulips for sale
- an old couple holding hands
- hearing a Beatles song which my dad used to play
- passing by an old church

They say you can find joy in simple things. You just have to know which ones can make you happy. These are my own set of simple things. My aim is to make the list longer…:)
